Connecting Construction Research with Practical Digital Workflows

Research in digital construction explores how building models can support more than design visualization. It asks how information can move between design, manufacturing, assembly, and asset management—and what needs to improve along the way. My work at Soban Consulting includes research-oriented consulting on building information modelling (BIM), model information exchange, and digital workflows for construction manufacturing and automation. A central focus is making model data more useful beyond its original design environment. A component may appear correctly in a 3D model, but downstream tools also need to understand what it represents, how it relates to other components, and which information is relevant to a manufacturing or assembly task. This is where research into IFC, an open standard for exchanging building information, becomes particularly valuable.
